DTN COMMENTS:  Light trade is being reported, with Northern dressed deals 
marked at $292, $1 lower than last week's weighted average basis 
Nebraska. Southern live business is being done at $182, steady with last 
week's weighted average. Some asking prices remain firm around $184 to 
$185 in the South, and $295-plus in the North. 

The just released April 1 on feed report listed 11.8 million head, up 1% 
from April 2023. Placements in March totaled 1.75 million head, 12% below 
last year; marketings in March totaled 1.71 million head, 14% less than 
the prior year; other disappearance in March totaled 57,000 head, 8% 
above the same time last year.

Today's slaughter totaled 113,000 head, 4,000 more than both a week and 
year ago. Saturday's kill is estimated at 20,000 head, bringing the 
weekly total to 620,000 head, 17,000 above the prior week, but 5,000 less 
than the previous year. Live cattle futures closed mixed, mostly modestly 
higher, up 30 to off 5. While feeder issues ended the day modestly to 
moderately lower, off 27 to 87. Beef cutouts are expected to close higher 
with light to moderate box movement.
